Common Concerns

I can appreciate the difficult decision making process that most people go through when deciding to go to therapy, let alone looking for a therapist. In an attempt to make this process a bit easier, here are some of the questions I am frequently asked by clients. I hope you find these questions and answers helpful in your decision making process.

I understand that you use a multidimensional approach, but what is a session with you actually like?

  • I will always try my best to create an inviting environment for you to share your thoughts and feelings.
  • Typically, I’ll begin a session by gauging how you have been since we last met and discussing your priorities in the moment. It’s easy to let the new things that spring up in day-to-day life  take up all of our time together. I’ll do my best to keep us on track, balancing the new issues while remaining focused on your long term goals.
  • My approach to therapy incorporates a lot of my personality and has been described as direct, assertive and outgoing. I am also known to use a lot of humor in therapy sessions and I am not shy about directly confronting difficult issues while still helping you to feel comfortable and understood.

I feel like my situation is somewhat unique, how can you help me with something if you've never experienced it?

  • You’re right, your situation is unique to you. Even so, there’s a very good chance I could be helpful.
  • My basis for providing assistance is not only to draw on my professional training, but to also use my understanding of people and what makes them tick. This is largely based on the commonalities that most people share such as: feelings of stress, disappointment, anger, grief, depression, shame, fear and sadness.
  • For most people, meeting their therapeutic goals involves changes to their environment , behavior and their thought process. My role is to provide you with support and tools for making these  desired changes.
